The second iteration in Verner Panton's exploration of cone chairs, the Heart Chair was first introduced in 1959 and is now being produced by Vitra. Originally made from upholstered, bent sheet metal, the Heart Chair is now constructed from fiberglass-reinforced plastic but otherwise remains unchanged. In spirit and form, the Heart Chair preceeds the Pop Art furniture movement of the 1960s which made heavy use of bright colors and clear iconic references.
Verner Panton trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, and initially worked in Arne Jacobsen's architectural practice. He established his own design office in 1955 and is credited with the design of the very first single-form injection-moulded plastic chair.
